Our Christmas Retreat 2009 : Memories, Scenes, Impressions

Arrival: After one of the most challenging six months of our lives we decided that it would be most beneficial to take a few days together on a brief get a way. Sometime, much after dark, in a vast blackness, deep in the forest, down long winding road and through a woods of pine, our Pilot’s headlights cast a shadow on a dim lit dwelling that was to be our cabin retreat. We left the car running with bright lights illuminating the scene. We saw in the distance from our parking spot a two story A Frame cabin, mostly hidden under tall pine trees whose arms sagged heavy from the weight of the snow. The side of the cabin, that we could see, was a layer of white snow. Everything glistened from the glare of out lights like a spotlight on a newly found treasure. Smoke drifted from the cabin’s chimney, Winter purity covered everything, low hanging pine boughs laden with heaps of fresh fallen snow, a roaring fire, tall trees sheltering the hidden dwelling, while inside Becky prepared a dinner on a pine table with plates of truffled pasta, anise marinated pork, celery root and carrot mash, Dancing Bull red Cabernet wine. Alone together with 40 years of memories in that secluded place. And so it beganb.

Morning one:
We awoke to light slowly illuminating a white covered world.
The sting of fresh morning chilled air assaulted our faces.
Like waking in a Currier and Ives Christmas card,
We strolled into morning’s white purity,
Beneath tree limbs extended,
Symbolizing all our hopes and dreams,
Each branch sheltering, protecting us,
Layers of white,
like a memories of joy,
Cleansing branches of all blemishes,
So only purity remained visible,.
On arms intertwined,
As far as we could see in white forests’ density.
